# Languages

> Add target languages, set fallbacks and change the source language.

The project page shows, per language, how many keys are translated, how many are not translated yet and when the language was last updated. Click a language to open the [editor](/guide/editor).

## Add a language

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose a language">
    Click **Add language** (*Taal toevoegen*) and choose a language from the [language list](#the-language-list). You can search by name or code. Tolk knows the plural rules of every language.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a fallback">
    Under **Falls back to** (*Valt terug op*), choose the language an export uses when a translation is missing. For `nl-BE`, for example, that is `nl`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Translate with AI right away (optional)">
    Check **Translate with AI right away** (*Direct vertalen met AI*) to give all keys an AI translation immediately. You can review them afterwards.
  </Step>
</Steps>

All existing keys are immediately available in the new language.

## The language list

In **Add language** and **New project** (*Nieuw project*) you choose from a fixed list, with the flag, the native name and the code of each language. The list has two groups:

| Group | Languages |
| - | - |
| **European languages** (*Europese talen*) | All official EU languages, plus Bosnian, Catalan, Welsh, Basque, Galician, Icelandic, Luxembourgish, Macedonian, Norwegian (`no`), Russian, Albanian, Serbian (also `sr-Latn`), Turkish and Ukrainian, and the variants `de-AT`, `de-CH`, `en-GB`, `fr-BE`, `fr-CH` and `nl-BE` |
| **Other languages** (*Overige talen*) | Arabic, Bengali, `en-AU`, `en-CA`, `en-US`, `es-MX`, Persian, Filipino, `fr-CA`, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, `pt-BR`, Swahili, Thai, Urdu, Vietnamese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese (`zh-Hans`, `zh-Hant`) |

Existing project languages that are not in the list keep working, also in the API and in an import. If a language is missing, contact Every Day to add it.

## Change the fallback or remove a language

Under **Settings › Languages** (*Instellingen › Talen*) you change the fallback of a language or remove a language. Tolk refuses a fallback that creates a loop, where two languages fall back on each other. When you remove a language, Tolk tells you beforehand how many translators lose their access to the project as a result.

## Change the source language

You can make another language the source language, for example when the code moves from Dutch to English. This is only possible when **every key** already has a text in the new source language.

<Note>
  Switching the source language runs in the background and can take a while. Until it is done, you cannot translate, import or change the languages in that project. Tolk shows when it is done.
